What is an eSIM?
An eSIM is a SIM card that lives in the phone's own hardware instead of a removable tray. You download the plan — normally by scanning a QR code — and the phone treats it as a second line. Here is the part that matters if you are flying to the United States.
How an eSIM works
A phone with eSIM support has a small permanent chip that can hold one or more mobile plans. Buying a plan gets you an activation code; in the USA eSIM app that code is simply there, inside your order. The phone writes the plan onto the chip, and from then on it behaves like any other SIM.
Because the eSIM sits next to your physical SIM, the phone runs both at once. Your own number stays reachable while the eSIM does the data work on a US network.
eSIM or a prepaid SIM bought in the US
A US prepaid SIM means finding a store that is open, sometimes showing identification, sometimes giving a local address, and paying at a counter after a flight that has already taken most of your day. An eSIM arrives instantly, installs in about two minutes, and cannot fall down the side of a rental car seat.
Say the trade-off out loud: a local SIM gives you a US phone number, and this data plan does not. That number is what a delivery app's verification screen, a rental desk or a restaurant callback will ask for. If you only need the internet, the eSIM is faster and cheaper. If you need a number an American service can text, buy a local SIM as well.
Which phones support eSIM?
iPhone XS and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and most recent mid-range and flagship Android phones. Every iPhone sold in the United States since the 14 has no SIM tray at all. There are regional exceptions — a few models sold in certain markets ship without eSIM — so it is worth a look before you buy a plan.
Why it suits a trip to the US
Two slow steps disappear. There is no roaming statement waiting for you at home, and no errand on your first morning when you would rather be somewhere else.
You install the plan before leaving. When the aircraft doors open the phone finds a network on its own, and your messaging apps, your banking app and your own number carry on as before.
Is an eSIM secure?
At least as secure as a plastic SIM. The profile sits in a dedicated secure chip, it cannot be pulled out of a card somebody else picked up, and installing or removing it needs the unlocked phone in your hand.
